Yuri Nagaoka was born in Tokyo. She began her ballet training at the age of ten, and at twelve she joined Hiraoka Shiga Dance Company to learn modern ballet. Yuri was interested in various forms of performing arts and saw many dance and theatre performances before she encountered Butoh in her late teens. Since 1997, Yuri has performed and given workshops in many countries including South Korea, Hungary, Poland, Germany, France, United States, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, UK and Mexico.
Yuri started the Butoh company Dance Medium with Seisaku and has performed group pieces since 2005. According to Seisaku, Yuri's practice is a must for people who wish to enter their Butoh bodies. When Yuri works with Seisaku, she always teaches first before Seisaku teaches the second part to make their bodies to open to their way of Butoh.
In this workshop, Yuri takes her way to teach their method. After all, Yuri is not simply a shadow of Seisaku. She is a Butoh master herself who has her own way and same wisdom as Seisaku, as she has worked together closely with him for a long time. In this workshop, you can learn the mastery of Yuri's Butoh in depth.
This workshop is organised by the Why Butoh Festival 2026. It is a great introduction and preparation for the festival where Seisaku and Yuri teach in August 2026!
