Nov 15 (Sat) A night of pine, cedar, and prophecy. Carve your rune, claim your fate.
Long before the glow of electric lights and decorated trees, our ancestors gathered around a single sacred fire the Yule Log. In the dark of midwinter, when the sun seemed to abandon the earth, people of the North performed ancient rites to call back the light, honor their gods, and ensure fertility and protection for the coming year.
A massive oak, ash, or pine log was chosen with care, often from the family’s own land or a sacred grove. Star has pine o plenty we will begin with ceremony, blessed with mead, and lit from the embers of the last seasons fire symbolizing continuity between past, present, and future.
The log would burn slowly, sometimes for twelve nights, feeding the sun’s rebirth and keeping away malevolent spirits during the Wild Hunt, when Odin rode the winter skies. (Horns of Power)
When the Yule fire finally died, ashes and charred pieces of the log were kept all year for protection, fertility, and luck. Archaeological evidence connects these rites to both Norse and Anglo-Saxon traditions, where Yule was a time of ancestor veneration, divination, and offerings to the gods like Odin, Freyr, and Frigg.
At Star Sapphire Seminary, we honor these ancient customs because they connect us to the lineage of our people, our gods, and our land. When you craft your Yule log, you are:
Weaving your intentions into an ancestral practice older than any book or temple
Calling upon your gods and spirits to walk beside you into the new year
Joining a community of modern Pagans reviving sacred rites for the next generation
This is living gnosis not just history, but embodied magic.
