About this Event
Youth Work Works Conference brings together youth and community workers from across the youth and community sector. To participate in a diverse range of workshops on issues impacting our district's young people. With an opportunity for informal networking and engagement with sector-related stalls. Venue sponsor kindly provided by Oasis Academy Lister Park.
The conference will start with Charlee Bewsher, Strategy Manager , Regional Youth Work Unit - Yorkshire and Humber and Heather Wilson, Youth Services Development Manager to provide the local context. Followed by workshops - spaces are limited for each session and early booking is advised.
Conference Schedule:
5:15pm – 6:00pm | Registration, collect snack pack and refreshments, networking, and stalls.

Workshops
You can attend either ONE workshop for two-hours or TWO workshops for one-hour each.
On the booking page, the two-hour workshops will be in List A and the one-hour workshops will be in List B.
Workshop A - Spiritual and Ritual Based Abuse in Safeguarding
Jordan Alexander, Chair of the National Working Group against Spiritual and Ritual Abuse leads the workshop providing helpful insight into indicators and signs of spiritual and ritual based abuse. Jordan draws on his wealth of knowledge around this subject, helping us to gain valuable insight into this area of work, inviting us to explore how we can bring positive change to safeguard children and young people.

Workshop B - Recognise and Respond to Hate Crime Affecting Young People
A session focused on supporting youth and community workers to recognise and respond to hate crime affecting young people, and to share information about reporting pathways and community support.

Workshop C - Practitioner Wellbeing 'Looking After You!'
Working in a supportive role as a practitioner can be stressful, if we don't look after our own wellbeing! Work pressures can lead to stress, overload or burnout . This can be avoided if we recognise the need to take care of ourselves. This session will look at how to manage our own wellbeing.
The session will include some grounding tools and tips. It will be fun, practical and interactive . There will be an opportunity for self-reflection, to identify our own needs and develop our own wellbeing action plan.

Workshop D - Youth Work Pathways
A session to explore routes to youth work qualifications, bursaries, and paths to grow the youth work workforce. Providing valuable insights into how to start the routes to qualification from Level 2 up to Level 7.

Workshop E - Hear Our Voice Workshop – Voice and Influence
Highlights the importance of young people's voices and covers key mechanisms for youth participation, showcasing local youth voice projects where young people's voices have shaped change in areas like health, education, and community safety.

Length - 1 hour
Workshop F - Youth Vaping Workshop - Public Health
Explores how young people have influenced the design and development of a new strategy designed to address youth vaping. There will be a chance to learn about co-production and an introduction to the roll out of the new youth vaping strategy.

Workshop G - Safety of Women and Girls
Explores key issues around the safety of women and girls and highlights the role of allyship - especially young men - in promoting respect, challenging harmful behaviours, and advocating for positive change. The workshop will introduce youth and community workers to the Just Don’t campaign and associated workpack.

Workshop H - Transitional Safeguarding
Explores transitional safeguarding within universal youth work settings. Participants will examine the concept of safeguarding, strategies for managing risk and using a strengths-based approach that enables successful transition into adulthood.

Length - 1 hour
Workshop I - Naloxone & Harm Reduction
Identify risks and causes of opioid overdose, identify the signs of overdose. Understand how to respond during overdose and understand overdose prevention or harm reduction.
Know how to administer Naloxone and understand life support skills that may be needed in an overdose situation.
Understand the importance of ongoing conversations with people at risk of further overdose.

Workshop J - Basic Drug & Alcohol Awareness
Explore factors that influence substance use behaviour and understand the harmful impact of alcohol and drugs.
Understand different types of drugs, deepen knowledge on overdose, dependency and withdrawal.
Identify harm reduction strategies and know where to get alcohol and drug support.

Workshop K - From Youth Work to Power: Agitation, Action, and Political Education in Practice
To move youth and community workers from supporting young people to cope → to supporting young people to challenge and change the conditions they live in.

Workshop L - An Introduction to Commonweal
Do you want to challenge injustice?
Are you interested in learning how nonviolent activists have stood up to power and won?
Commonweal is a unique collection of over 14,000 books, pamphlets and journals on social change and activism, peace and disarmament, climate crisis & the green movement, nonviolent philosophy and practice, human rights, anti-racism and identity. The Collection is based at the JB Priestley Library, University of Bradford BD7 1DP and is open to the public and free to join. This workshop will share information about the history of Commonweal, showcase examples of materials within the Collection and how they can be accessed and utilized so that they can inform and inspire current and future activists.
