Limit of 40 Participants. Priority will be given to school social workers, school psychologists, other school-based mental health professionals, and special education administrators. Each participant will receive a $400 stipend for attendance. Free CEUs.
The School of Social Work’s Center for Excellence in Child Welfare (CECW) is pleased to announce this intensive 2-day in-person Youth in Care with Disabilities in Schools Train-the-Trainer event developed in support from the U.S. Department of Education’s School-Based Mental Health Grant awarded to West40 Intermediate Service Center #2 in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Participants will be trained to facilitate training in schools using CECW’s newly developed “Youth in Care with Disabilities Resource Guide.” The Resource Guide provides strategies for effective collaboration across child welfare and special education systems and offers guidance and resources on supporting the mental health needs of youth in care with disabilities, including those with complex medical needs. Participants will gain expertise in the manual’s content and become prepared to train other school-based mental health professionals on all aspects of the manual, including how to prevent maltreatment of youth with disabilities, how to effectively support the mental health needs of disabled youth who become involved in the foster care system, including preparing them for successful post-secondary transition, and how to manage one’s own self-care when working with this population. Emphasis will be placed on considering the mental health needs of youth in care with disabilities when engaging in special education processes.
