YOUNG MAKER WORKSHOPS: School's out Days! 4 workshops in Staten Island and Brooklyn to choose from!
Ages: 7-12
Join us this Fall for full day hack-a- thons! When school’s out, curious minds gather to take things apart, put them back together, and figure out how things work. Makers will utilize the Design Process to explore building, simple engineering, materials, and creative problem-solving through a series of hands-on challenges and projects. Each workshop will highlight the work of a thinker, artist, maker or mover that has helped us reimagine what design can do or say!
Kids will: design, build, test, tinker, and improve their creations.

September 21st | Rube Goldberg and Kinetic Energy! Staten Island
October 12th | Davinci and Flying Machines! Staten Island
November 11th | Imhotep and Ancient Architecture! Brooklyn
November 27th | Caroline Haslett and Electricity! Brooklyn
Time: 8:30am - 3:00pm
Price: $100 per workshop or $350 for all four
At Makerspace NYC, we believe kids learn best by building, experimenting, and testing their ideas in real time. Campers are encouraged to take creative risks, prototype solutions, and work together to improve their designs through trial and error. Whether a student loves engineering, art, invention, crafting, or imaginative play, this camp offers opportunities for every kind of maker to participate and contribute.
Students may use tools and materials including:
Hand saws
Hammers
Hot glue and tape
Battery-operated drills
Cardboard and recycled materials
Wood scraps and building hardware
Under close supervision from experienced Makerspace NYC instructors, students learn safe tool usage while gaining confidence, collaboration skills, and hands-on engineering experience. Allowing young makers to use real tools in a supportive environment helps foster independence, resilience, innovation, and problem-solving abilities.
Workshop activities may include:
Exploring the physics of force and motion
Designing and testing simple machines
Engineering launch mechanisms
Collaborative projects
Fortress and target building
Launch competitions and team challenges
Creative decoration and customization of projects
Makerspace NYC camps are designed to be welcoming, inclusive, and supportive for all learners. We encourage participation from students of all backgrounds, identities, neurodiverse experiences, and skill levels. Our teaching artists and facilitators create an environment where curiosity, creativity, and experimentation are celebrated.
Students should wear closed-toed shoes and clothing that can get messy.
Campers should bring a water bottle, lunch, and snack each day.
All tool use is supervised by Makerspace NYC staff.

Arrival & Check-In: 8:30 am –9:00 AM
Morning Meeting: 9:00 - 9:30am
Project time and clean up: 9:30 - 12:00PM
Lunch and Reading time : 12:00–1:00 PM
Free Play outside: 1:00–2:00 PM
Project Time: 2:00 PM - 2:45PM
Clean-Up & Dismissal: 2:45–3:00 PM
INSTRUCTORS:
Assata Gonzalez is a dedicated STEM educator and makerspace instructor who has been teaching hands-on, student-led programming at Makerspace NYC since 2021. Passionate about creative learning, engineering, and exploratory education, Assata designs immersive workshops and camps that encourage kids to build confidence through making, experimentation, and problem-solving.
Makerspace NYC instructor Evan Smith has been a dedicated part of the community for over 10 years, bringing deep experience in fabrication, metalworking, and creative problem-solving to every project. As the shop foreman, Evan helps maintain a safe, collaborative environment where students can turn ideas into real-world builds. Passionate about hands-on learning, he works closely with makers of all ages to guide ideas of projects to completion.
REFUNDS/CANCELLATIONS:
Workshop size limited to 12 students, minimum 6 students. We reserve the right to cancel the workshops if we do not have the minimum amount of students. If we cancel, we will refund you and notify you. You may cancel and get a refund up to seven days before the class. After that, refunds are contingent on us being able to fill your seat. Under no circumstances do we offer refunds to individuals who cancel on the same day. Please note, Eventbrite fees are non-refundable if you cancel.
