I’ve dreamed of creating this particular experience for years, and am so happy to have found a place to build it at the Dzanc House in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
This show is interactive and, if no one comes out, there won’t be any portraits because …
In addition to featuring select prints from the over 6,000 strangers I’ve drawn as part of my Drawn On The Way project, I’ll be creating a “Living Portrait Gallery” made of candid, on-the-spot portraits of visitors to Dzanc house (during the opening reception and gallery hours) and of portraits of strangers made in third spaces (cafes, shops, etc) in both Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.
As visitors - and community members – become spontaneous works of art, their portraits will create a living art gallery that grows and changes as the exhibit goes on -- illustrating the notion that each one of us is work of art and worthy of being seen and known.
In our busy and increasingly divided world that pushes us to rush through our day-to day lives, to live as anonymous strangers and to look past each other as we make our way… This exhibit will explore the power of art to create connection and transform the way we see ourselves, each other and the world.
The completed Living Portrait Gallery wall – revealed at the closing reception, Friday, April 25th – will show that seeing is truly a form of connection – and reveal the role of art in creating more community, connection and meaning in our daily lives.
You Are a Work Of Art is a celebration and exploration of what it means to be seen and to be known, with interactive elements that offer a warm invitation for anyone to experience the abundant joy, meaning and connection that only exists when we are truly present to the people and the world around us.
I can’t wait to see you there!
Sarah
And it’s not just me that will be making Art, you can join in too!
To include visitors in this experience and encourage them to try this themselves, I will have a "blind portrait" drawing station where visitors can use the "blind drawing" technique (where you don't look at the paper when you draw) to draw a fellow stranger or friend. Visitors will be invited to post their portraits in our temporary mural made up of these fun, funky drawings. This "no-look" process makes drawing fun and accessible for anyone. And, as the exhibit goes on, the mural will grow showing that each one of us is a work of art -- and that each one of us can make art!
