This holiday edition of YesterWays is inspired by a special item in the collection: a very old pomander made in 1890 (Accession # 67.2.22), by Miss Pauline Wagner, currently on display in our 200 Years and Counting exhibit.
In the Middle Ages, pomanders were tiny openwork containers for perfumes and fragrant herbs worn as jewelry. During the Victorian era, making and gifting decorative homemade aromatic fruit pomanders became a popular Christmas tradition. We'll provide the oranges, cloves, and ribbon so you can make your own, and hopefully yours may last as long as Miss Wagner's.
In addition to the pomander, try your hand at making a Froebel star. Named after the founder of the kindergarten concept Friedrich Fröbel (1782-1852), Froebel stars were popular handmade decorations that came to the US with immigrants from central Europe, made from folded strips of colorful paper.
YesterWays is free of charge, generally suitable for ages 8 to 80 (and up!), and there’s no appointment necessary.
