"Barrambin was my first home. This special part of Brisbane has been a major camp and a place for ceremony and corroboree for thousands of years. Our stories, our traditions are in the ground here, in the vegetation, the trees, the lakes, the hills. It is irreplaceable."
Aunty Sandra King OAM, Section 10 statement.
A Magandjin-born Elder of Yagara, Quandamooka, Bundjalung and South Sea Islander ancestry, Auntry Sandra's first home was Barrambin, the Victoria Park settlement where, as a child in the 1950s, she sat with Elders and learned her people's ways. Recently, she filed a Federal Heritage Protection claim to safeguard Barrambin from the 2032 stadium development, that will destroy those sacred grounds.
Aunty Sandra's is a story of achievement. She became one of Australia's first Aboriginal fashion models, built her own agency, and founded Black, Bold & Beautiful, the Indigenous women's event that has reached thousands of people. She serves as Reconciliation Action Plan Coordinator for the Anglican Church Southern Queensland, and in 2020 received the Medal of the Order of Australia.
