At the turn of the 20th century, a new wave of American composers—rooted in New England and deeply inspired by European Romanticism—emerged to shape the nation’s musical identity. Known as the “Second Boston School,” these composers brought lush harmonies, lyrical lines, and homegrown spirit to the concert hall. This evening’s program shines a spotlight on two of its most compelling voices. George Whitefield Chadwick’s String Quartet No. 4 blends Brahmsian richness with a distinctly American character, while Amy Beach, the first successful woman composer of large-scale art music in the U.S., dominates the program with three stunning works. Her Three Browning Songs, beloved for their emotional depth and soaring vocal lines, open the concert with Romantic flair. Her String Quartet and Piano Quintet—bold, expressive, and rhythmically daring—reveal a composer of fearless originality, unafraid to weave tenderness with tempest.
Join us for an unforgettable celebration of the Yankee Romantics who helped America find its musical voice.
