Yamas (restraint) and niyamas (observances) are the first two limbs of Patanjali’s eightfold path to yoga, and are considered to be the foundation of yoga practice. Now more than ever we must live our yoga, on and off the mat, and we can only do this with intention and study. We will use a somatic lens to explore these limbs.
The Yamas and Niyamas are foundational to all yogic thought and can be cultivated in everyday life to align us with our higher calling of knowing peace, abundance, good relations with others, compassion, and connection. Understanding these principles with mind and body can support more freedom and joy in everyday life and enhance the yoga practices we know.
This training will be an opportunity to dive gently and deeply into the 10 ancient guideposts that the yogis have discovered to be divinely and practically useful. These include Ahimsa (Nonviolence), Satya (Truthfulness), Asteya (Nonstealing), Bramacharya (Nonexceess), Aparigraha (Nonpossessiveness), Saucha (Purity), Santosha (Contentment), Tapas (Self- Discipline), Svadyaya (Self-Study), Ishvara Pranidhana (Surrender).
We will look at how our modern lives and our unique paths can benefit from each Yama and Niyama, using somatics and embodiment as a guiding principle.
