Wyrd War rides out again for their Eleventh Annual Walpurgisnacht Film Festival! Celebrate the dark feminine archetype in cinema and the 55th anniversary of the British supernatural horror classic THE BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW (1971) with this rare 35mm screening.Widely considered one of the foundational “unholy trinity” of folk horror films, together with WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968) and THE WICKER MAN (1973), THE BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW (also known as SATAN’S SKIN) is an atmospheric period tale set in an early 18th Century English village that is besieged by malefic forces after a hideously deformed skull with a single intact eyeball is unearthed by a farmer while tilling his field. London’s Tigon film studios were actively competing for the attention of Hammer’s horny adult horror audience when they edited several short occult themed stories into one cohesive tale of satanic paranoia and deception, and THE BLOOD ON SATAN’S CLAW is best enjoyed as a heady gothic experience that at times transcends its low-budget through the brilliant score of Australian born composer Marc Wilkinson. A student of electronic music pioneer Edgar Varèse, Wilkinson’s seminal score for director Piers Haggard is an exercise in devilish notes and fiendish timbre, made more unsettling with the use of two unusual instruments, the Ondes Mertenot and the cimbalom, that punctuate the musical themes that drive the story toward its dramatic conclusion.
Can enchantment be found during the collapse of civilization as we have known it? Attending our rare 35mm presentation of this British folk horror classic on Witches Night could be a start.
