Microsoft Inclusive Tech Lab Tour (In-Person & Online)
Join the Western Washington section of ASME on Friday April 3, 2026, 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm PST for a tour of the Microsoft Inclusive Tech Lab in Redmond, WA. This is a hybrid tour of the Inclusive Tech Lab, with a tour focus on human to machine interface for people with limited hand dexterity and impaired touch sensitivity.
Since its opening in 2017, the Microsoft Inclusive Tech Lab has provided an accessible space dedicated to designing, testing, and incubating technology for, with, and by people with disabilities. It fosters collaboration between engineers and the disability community to create accessible products like the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Adaptive Accessories.
Key highlights of the Inclusive Tech Lab:
- Purpose: The lab functions as an "embassy" for the disability community, ensuring products are built with, not just for, them.
- Focus Areas: It covers inclusive modern life, education, and gaming, featuring spaces like a demo classroom and a "work and play" area.
- Design Philosophy: Guided by the principle that solving for the most extreme disability scenarios benefits everyone, the lab pushes the boundaries of accessible innovation.
- Impact: Since 2017, it has hosted thousands of visitors and acted as a catalyst for accessible hardware and software, including Surface Adaptive Kits and Windows accessibility features.
- Environment: The facility is designed to be fully accessible and serves as a hub for collaborative workshops and design sprints.
