New biography of prolific children's author Terrance Dicks, who is best known for his time as script editor and writer on Doctor Who.
About this Event

The first full-length biography of prolific Doctor Who writer and script editor Terrance Dicks, written by Simon Guerrier with the cooperation of Terrance’s family.

“It's sometimes said that Terrance Dicks, who wrote more than 200 books for children, taught a generation to read,” says Simon. “I don't think that's quite true. Instead, he taught us to love reading – passing on to us his own passion for books. His direct, straightforward style looks deceptively simple, but he had an extraordinary eye for the telling detail, the concise character sketch, the killer line. The more I read him, the more in awe I am. Now, with access to his own papers and a wealth of other sources, I'm going to tell Terrance's story.”

Terrance was also responsible for many classic Victorian novels hitting the screen on BBC through the 1980s. The Portico Library will put first editions of some of these books - Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist - on display for the evening.

Simon will be in conversation with Portico Library trustee Esther Lisk-Carew (Manchester Metropolitan University) on writing this book and Terrance's life.

Books will be on sale. It is a fundraiser for the Portico Reunited.
