Dive deep into your winter of writing by creating a brief, but deep, flash essay that explores a personal connection to place. Participants will choose a specific place and moment in time—either fictional or from life—and write a flash story or essay of roughly 100-500 words that explores the emotional truth of the moment. We’ll work on ways to add spark through character and detail, find the heart of the work through metaphor and theme, build and sustain momentum, and engage readers on a deeper level.In this two-part workshop, the first session will focus on discussing a few published examples, brainstorming our own ideas, and doing some writing exercises to get us started. We'll leave the first session with a completed (but rough) draft. In the second session, we’ll have an opportunity to share (as desired), give and receive feedback (also as desired), and make some revisions, so we leave with a draft that’s more polished than the first. Whether the piece stays short or becomes the seed of something bigger, that’s up to you!
