Writing Secrets, Tips & Coffee

Come join us for a morning filled with inspiration, knowledge, and, of course, coffee at the Saskatoon Club.

For adults who want to write for young readers, this FREE one-off event features FOUR brilliant local authors, sharing their writing secrets about what it's really like to live and work as a writer in Saskatoon. Authors Kristy Jackson, Khodi Dill, Arthur Slade and Alice Kuipers will talk with you about how they write for young readers. Alice is launching a new book, Spark, which is full of advice for aspiring writers, and our featured authors are all brilliant writers for all age groups: picture books all the way to young adult.

Turning The Tide will be selling books and the event is hosted by University of Regina Press.

This is an event for adults who've dreamed of writing, and for anyone curious about the writing life. We'll have coffee, tea, homemade pastries, yoghurt bar and seasonal fruit, time to ask your questions, and a panel all about the fabulous world of writing for kids and young adults.

Whether you're a seasoned author, you're starting out, or you'll just enjoy a morning celebrating and supporting local writers with coffee and treats, this is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and learn from each other's experiences.

Khodi Dill is an author, anti-racism educator, spoken word artist, and emcee from Saskatoon. His work focuses on themes of social justice, Black identity, hip-hop, and joy. His latest publication is a nonfiction book for young adults titled stay up: racism, resistance, and reclaiming Black freedom (Annick Press). Kristy Jackson is a communications professional by day, writer by night. Her debut novel, MORTIFIED, is for ages 8-12 and was published by HarperCollins in May 2024. MORTIFIED was chosen as an Indigo Staff Pick of the Month for June 2024. Mortified was also shortlisted for a 2024 Governor General Award.

Alice Kuipers has published thirteen books for young readers. Her chapter book series, featuring Polly Diamond, was named a Parents Magazine Best Book, and Kirkus describes her as "Full to the brim with fun... For story lovers and story tellers." Alice’s work is published in 36 countries; she's Head of Coaching at The Novelry where she helps writers finish their books. She regularly writes online at www.alicekuipers.substack.com.

Arthur Slade was raised on a ranch in the Cypress Hills of Saskatchewan. He is the author of over thirty novels for young readers including Amber Fang, The Dragon Assassin series and Dust. His work has won multiple awards including the Governor General’s Award (Canada) and Le Grand Prix d’Imaginaire (France). He is also the author of several comic books and a graphic novel.
