Mark your calendars for a special evening with National Book Award-honored author and Anchorage native Leigh Newman, as she shares from her acclaimed short story collection, Nobody Gets Out Alive (2022). Set across Alaska’s rich landscapes, these stories capture the beauty and struggle of life in the Last Frontier, weaving between hope and heartache through the ages.
You won't want to miss this chance to hear Leigh read from her work and talk about her creative process, the craft of writing, and the role of community in shaping her stories. Plus, there's an opportunity to ask her your own questions during the Q&A!

About Leigh Newman:
Leigh Newman’s story collection Nobody Gets Out Alive was Longlisted for the National Book Award for Fiction. Her stories have appeared in Harper’s Magazine, The Paris Review, The Best American Short Stories, The Best American Mystery and Suspense, One Story, Tin House, Electric Literature, American Short Fiction, and McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern. Her memoir about growing up in Alaska, Still Points North was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Prize. In 2020, she was awarded a Pushcart Prize and an American Society of Magazine Editor’s prize, as well as received The Paris Review’s Terry Southern Prize for Humor. She currently serves as the Books Director for Oprah Daily and the Editorial Director of Oprah's Book Club.
About the Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series:
The Midnight Sun Visiting Writers Series is an annual program that hosts local and nationally renowned writers for craft lectures and public readings. The first events were held in the early 1970s, and over the years, many of the most prestigious names in literature—Robert Pinsky, Lucille Clifton, Scott Russell Sanders, Mark Doty, Camille Dungy, and Terry Tempest Williams, to name a few—have made appearances in Fairbanks. All events are free and open to the public!
