Speakers: Sharmila Sengupta, Barisha Janakalyan Vidyapith, Authors and editors of ‘Itihase Hatekhori’ book series and Megha Malhotra, History for Peace
Itihashe Hatekhori is a series of illustrated history books meant for middle and high school children, It includes nine books that, taken together, look at various aspects of social, political and economic histories of the subcontinent from an intersectional perspective. The idea has been to introduce the complexities of the discipline in an anecdotal fashion and an accessible language. The purpose of this series is to make the children curious about the past, to develop empathy towards diverse experiences of the past, and to understand the importance of the verifiability of the sources in writing history. The books were written as a part of a project sponsored by the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung South Asia. They have now been made available for purchase by Hatekhori Publishers.
Sharmila Sengupta has been an educator for the past 26 years. Currently she is the Headmistress of Barisha Janakalyan Vidyapith for Girls, a Government-sponsored school in Kolkata. Earlier she has taught in Delhi Public School, Army School, Vivekananda Mission School, Kailash Vidyamandir and Sri Shikshayatan College.
Sharmila is the recipient of the coveted Best Innovation Award from the National Centre for School Leadership, New Delhi; the Techno India Dronacharya Award for exemplary school leadership; the US State Department’s Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Award, 2016.
During her U.S. grant, she taught at Robinson Secondary School, Fairfax, Virginia. A strong advocate of Continuous Professional Development, she has won five competitive scholarships to prestigious global programs. She regularly undertakes action- research projects on classroom teaching and student engagement. Her research work has been published in the TESOL International Association and IATEFL publications. As a teacher-trainer she regularly facilitates the Continuous Professional Development of in-service and prospective teachers from around the world.
Sharmila also loves reading, cooking, driving and traveling.
Meena Megha Malhotra is Director, History for Peace—a network for social science educators in the subcontinent.
Anwesha Sengupta: Anwesha Sengupta teaches history at the Institute of Development Studies Kolkata. Her areas of interest are Partition and Decolonization in South Asia, History of Popular Movements, Urban History and Public History. She edits Itihashe Hatekhori series with Debarati Bagchi.
Debarati Bagchi: Debarati Bagchi is a Senior Research Fellow and the Deputy Director of Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies, Delhi (An institute of the Max Weber Stiftung India).
She is a historian by training with a keen interest in Public History, History of Education, Environmental History, History of India's North East. She edits Itihashe Hatekhori series with Anwesha Sengupta.
