Writing Futures

We’re often advised to ‘write about what we know’. But what if we want to write about what we don’t know? Imagining future scenarios can help us negotiate a fragile world. Using exercises, discussion and selected texts from poetry and speculative fiction, we’ll look at utopias, dystopias and places between. We’ll consider how to enter and inhabit a future world by asking ‘what if?’ We’ll begin to build up detail and atmosphere, either to map out a novel, a short story or a long poem.
