Writers Read is a monthly opportunity for an audience to come and listen to local writers in an intimate environment. Each second Wednesday of the month, three writers read from their work followed by time for the audience to join with the writers for a talkback. These discussions have been eye opening, touching, and inspiring. Audiences have left the venue ready to write.
This series is facilitated by Lindy Whiton, a member of LAVA, and pulls from several different communities of writers throughout the local area. We are extremely lucky to draw from an abundance of talent.
Carol Edelstein is a social worker and the founder/co-director of Gallery of Readers (www.galleryofreaders.org) in her hometown of Northampton, Massachusetts. She is the author of three books of poems, most recently Past Repair (Simian Press, 2020). Her poetry and fiction have been published in numerous anthologies and literary magazines, including The Massachusetts Review, The Georgia Review, Alaska Quarterly Review and Noon. She co-edits, with Elizabeth George, the flash fiction online magazine Switch.
Leo Hwang’s work has appeared in The Massachusetts Review, Glimmer Train Stories, Fiction, Rethinking Marxism, and other journals. He was the recipient of scholarships from the Napa Valley and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conferences. Mr. Hwang received his B.A. in English and Fine Arts from the University of the South, an M.F.A. from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and received his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts in Geosciences with a focus on the diverse community economies of artists and artisans in Franklin County. Mr. Hwang is the Associate Dean for Inclusive Excellence and Assistant Academic Dean in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and has taught at Westfield State University, the University of Massachusetts, Mount Holyoke College, and Greenfield Community College.
Althea Keaton is a writer, artist, and arts educator who grew up in the woods of New York state. Their writing, particularly their comics, can be found in various compilations as well as in their self-published series’ From the Heart and Existence Stories. They live in Greenfield, MA with their partner and cats.
