We the People. The most beloved words in our Constitution. When was the last time you looked over the Constitution?

The Constitution is the foundation for American democracy. Often its amendments  mean something to one group of people, and something else to others. And of course it comes down to interpretation, often from the Supreme Court. Therein lies our challenges. 

Melissa Murray, who holds an endowed chair in Law at NYU, is one of our favorite legal analysts on MS NOW, on her podcast called Strict Scrutiny, and in her numerous contributions to  various media platforms. She tackles complicated legal principles, and translates them into accessible language so that those of us who aren't lawyers can understand the complexities and nuances of the law. In her new book, simply titled The U.S. Constitution: A Comprehensive and Annotated Guide for the Modern Reader, she takes us through this living document, giving us historical context and reference, and provides us with contemporary relevant examples. 

The United States Supreme Court is the ultimate final destination in legal decisions. It has always been a subject of fascination, mystery, and these days, a great deal of consternation as precedents are upended, as rights are granted and taken away, often by a party line majority. Melissa Murray delineates the relationship between the Supreme Court's decisions and the document that frames our legal system. 

In conversation with Hon. Katie Porter, who delights in speaking truth to power. She is a Professor of Law at UC Irvine, and memorably served in Congress as a Representative for Orange County, whiteboard in hand. She is an expert in banking and bankruptcy, and consumer protection.
