Writers Bloc & The Ebell present NFL legend Colin Kaepernick, discussing his new book The Perilous Fight and his fight for racial justice
About this Event

Standing up during the Star Spangled Banner at a huge football game is as much part of American culture as is the game itself. Colin Kaepernick changed that in one game in 2016. His silent protest ultimately cost him his career. But the attention his protest created made him a lightning rod in the national conversation on race in America. While Colin Kaepernick was an absolutely extraordinary athlete, holding the NFL record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in a game, he's possibly better known as an incendiary political activist on the field-- or at least on the sidelines.

For those of us who don't follow pro football, we still know him for his stance, if you will, during the national anthems before his games with the San Francisco 49ers. Sitting down during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner, or "taking the knee," was Kapernick's way of calling attention to police violence committed against Black Americans. In his new book, The Perilous Fight, Kaepernick explains the motivations which led him to sit out the national anthem. He wasn't acting on some sudden impulse or whim; he explains the personal sacrifices he made to underscore injustices he felt needed to be amplified.
