CLASS INFORMATION
Students will learn how to develop new writing using experiments, puzzles, equations, surrealist games, tarot, and more. We will look at prominent contemporary and modern writers who have used ‘word games’ as starting points or structural conceits in their writing, from the French Oulipo writers to Sheila Heti and Helen Dewitt. We will investigate how these ‘games’ can form the basis of innovative, experimental writing practices that students can continue to explore outside of the boundaries of the course. This is a very exploratory class that allows for students to work in their preferred modality, be it poetry, short fiction, or nonfiction/memoir.
