This is my favorite event of the year! Traditionally we have done this event with our Jeep club, but this year I wanted to create an event for anyone and everyone who wants to meet up with us and caravan to the Houston National Cemetery to participate in Honoring our Veterans by placing wreaths on their gravesites. This is an experience for the entire family! For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used as a symbol of honor and have served as a living tribute renewed annually. Wreaths Across America believes the tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active-duty military, and their families. Wreath-laying ceremonies are held at more than 4,600 locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
Every year since 2008, Congress proclaims a Saturday in December as National Wreaths Across America Day. This year’s Wreaths Across America Day will take place on December 14, 2024. On that day, more than 2 million Veterans’ Wreaths will be placed across Local, National and Military Cemeteries as well as Veterans’ Memorials and historic sites.
This is such a moving event and EVERY military person in the cemetery DESERVES a wreath on their grave! Time is running out to sponsor a wreath! The deadline for sponsorship is December 2, 2024. Visit https://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org for more information.
Wreath Day Meet Up Details
Time: 8:30 AM
Meet Up Location: To Be Announced
We will leave the designated location at 9:00 AM and caravan to the Houston National Cemetery
The ceremony begins at 11:00, immediately following (not before) everyone heads to the cemetery and begins to lay wreaths.
There is a protocol for respectfully laying a wreath and honoring a Veteran
1st - Remove the tag from the wreath
2nd - Place the wreath against the marker
3rd - Straighten the bow
4th and finally the most important part - When each wreath is placed the servicemember's name is said out loud and thanked for their service, ensuring their memory lives on.
