WPM150 Lunchtime Talk: Caribbean Footsteps – Born and Raised by a Coal Mine

As a successful singer/songwriter and second-generation immigrant child of Jamaican parents, Steve Edwards was born and raised in the shadows of the now-disappearing, traditional industries of a working class, British northern city.

Hear a story of the hopes, dreams, sacrifice and courage of the people who were invited to leave their home, cross an ocean and come to Great Britain in the 1950s, to help rebuild the country from the rubble of the Second World War and to create a brighter future for themselves.

Like fiery Jamaican jerk chicken with a side of crispy Yorkshire pudding – explore with Steve the links between the two islands and the pride he feels about having one foot in each of them.

This talk is in association with the exhibition at Weston Park Museum, which continues until May 2027.
