About this Event
Welcome to Binge Thinking! We host professors and experts at local pubs to give talks on fascinating topics...
AI is already diagnosing diseases, reading scans, and recommending treatments — often better than human doctors. So here’s the question:
Why don’t we trust it?
In this talk, Professor Carey Morewedge explores the strange gap between performance and perception when it comes to AI in medicine.
- Algorithms now match or outperform human experts in areas like radiology and diagnosis
- In many parts of the world, algorithmic care may be the only scalable solution to massive shortages in medical expertise
- And yet — even when the data is clear — people hesitate to put their health in the hands of a machine
Is that hesitation rational?
Or are we overestimating the humans we’d be replacing?
This talk dives into the psychology behind our distrust of algorithms — and what it would take to actually accept AI as a doctor.
About the Speaker
Carey Morewedge is the Everett W. Lord Distinguished Faculty Scholar and Professor of Marketing at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business.
