1. Background
Every year on June 20, the world marks World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honor the strength, resilience, and courage of people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations.
World Refugee Day serves as an important reminder that the right to seek safety is a universal human right and a shared responsibility. It creates an opportunity for communities, governments, service providers, and civil society to stand together in solidarity with refugees and advocate for policies and systems that uphold dignity, inclusion, and protection.
This year, Hope for Refugees International (HRI), a refugee-led organization based in Toronto, will host the World Refugee Day 2026 – Community Rooted Hangout, bringing together refugees, asylum seekers, newcomers, students, social workers, refugee-serving organizations, artists, academics, policymakers, media representatives, community organizations, community leaders, long-term residents, and allies.
The event comes at a critical moment globally and nationally.
Around the world, forced displacement continues to rise while refugee protection systems face increasing pressure. Across many countries, including Canada, public and political discourse around refugees and immigration has become increasingly polarized. Refugee-serving organizations continue to experience funding reductions while refugee communities encounter growing barriers to settlement, healthcare, housing, and social inclusion.
Against this backdrop, World Refugee Day 2026 seeks to create a space of hope, solidarity, action, celebration, and public dialogue.
This event recognizes that refugees are not simply recipients of support, they are leaders, workers, artists, entrepreneurs, neighbors, and community builders whose contributions strengthen our communities every day.
2. Event Goal
