About this Event

Join Afrodesiac for our August World Movie Night, a monthly film series where we explore the world through the beautiful medium of cinema.

This month, we’ll be screening Queen of Katwe — an inspiring and heartfelt film based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, a young girl from Katwe, Uganda, whose life begins to transform when she discovers the game of chess.

Set in Uganda, Queen of Katwe tells a powerful story about hope, possibility, and the brilliance that can exist in places the world often overlooks.

This evening is designed to be warm, uplifting, and culturally meaningful — a space to watch, reflect, and connect through a story rooted in Uganda, family, dreams, and determination.

No film knowledge is needed. Just bring your curiosity, an open heart, and your love for a good movie night.

Each month, we screen a movie from around the world or centered on a meaningful cultural experience — using storytelling as a bridge to better understand identity, history, family, community, and belonging.

Film allows us to see the world through someone else’s eyes. At Afrodesiac, we believe that curiosity is where connection begins.

Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made at least 5 days prior to the event. If you need to cancel between 48 hours and 5 days, we’ll offer a credit toward a future Afrodesiac event. We cannot offer refunds or credits for cancellations made within 48 hours of the scheduled event.
