About this Event

This course explores global artistic traditions through an anthropological lens, shifting focus from pure aesthetics to examine how art functions as a tool for communication, power and resistance, and meaning-making within different societies. Starting with examining examples of Western art strongly informed by tribal art, especially African Art during the beginning 20th century by artist like Picasso or Matisse, we will explore later art movements crossing cultural boundaries and styles, including art from South East Asia like Japan. We will investigate the social life of objects across cross-cultural contexts and critically assess art in relation to the history of colonialism. Informed by theories of visual anthropology we will learn how to read images critically and develop new ways of seeing art.

Dr Barbara Knorpp is a visual anthropologist with a special interest in film history and is based in London. She teaches at Open City Docs, UCL and Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts.
