About the workshop:
Experience the rare opportunity to work hands-on with a MMAM exhibiting artist. Join Tanya Aguiñiga in a one-day immersive workshop, Weaving in Community. Traveling from Southern California, Aguiñiga brings her internationally recognized practice that spans sculpture, installation, performance, and community-based work, into an intimate, accessible learning environment rooted in making and exchange.
In this participatory session, you’ll explore off-loom weaving techniques that require no tools beyond your hands and a simple warp structure created from found materials. Through a brief introduction to craft histories and foundational weaving principles, Aguiñiga will guide you in transforming everyday fibers and objects into expressive woven forms. Participants are encouraged to bring materials from their own homes or surroundings to incorporate into their work, grounding the process in personal and local context. This workshop will be conducted in both English and Spanish.
About the instructor
Born in San Diego and raised in Tijuana, Aguiñiga’s practice is deeply shaped by her experience as a binational artist. Her work foregrounds themes of identity, migration, and collective storytelling, often unfolding through collaborative, community-driven projects such as AMBOS (Art Made Between Opposite Sides). A recipient of major honors including a Creative Capital grant and a United States Artists Fellowship, and a finalist for the Loewe Craft Prize, her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design.
