Tropical Fruit Still Life Workshop $85
3 hours, 1-4pm Oct. 25th
Step into a vibrant world of color, texture, and flavor with this immersive still life photography (and sketching) workshop. Inspired by the lush beauty of tropical fruits, this session blends art history, hands-on creation, and a shared community experience.
We’ll begin with a look at classic still life works, spanning Dutch Golden Age paintings and Renaissance studies to uncover the timeless elements that bring still lifes to life: light, shadow, direction, color, texture, and shape. You’ll also see examples from my own photographic series of tropical fruit still lifes, which form the foundation of this workshop.
What makes this class special is the subject itself. Instead of the standard “ball and cone” approach, we’ll be working with a curated selection of tropical fruits—ripe, unusual, and beautiful specimens sourced from South Florida farmers. Some may even have stories or cultural ties that deepen their meaning. Whether the fruit sparks a memory from childhood, connects to your heritage, or simply piques your curiosity, it will become the starting point for creating art that feels personal and alive.
Together, we’ll arrange a few still lifes as a group, experimenting with composition, fabric backdrops, and layers of texture. You’ll then have time to photograph or sketch the setup, guided by instruction on:
- Best practices for arranging and lighting a still life
- Tips for capturing strong photographs (with any camera)
- Techniques you can use to continue making still lifes at home
The only thing you’ll need to bring is your camera, or a sketchbook if drawing inspires you more. At the end, we’ll gather to share our favorite images and, in true tropical fashion, cut into the fruits for a tasting. This final moment turns the workshop into not just an art-making experience, but also a sensory celebration of color, flavor, and community.
Come ready to create, taste, and see still life in a new, vibrant way.
