We are very pleased to be working with artist Gaynor Devaney on this exciting project to create a textile map of North Shields, which will be a legacy of the town’s 800th anniversary year.The capriccio map, rather than a geographic representation of the town and its fish quay, will illustrate a sense of the place, its landmarks and its people.
It will be based on a paper capriccio map of North Shields that Gaynor created during 2023 with local community groups.
This is one of six workshops at the Old Low Light Heritage Centre over the summer when people can share stories and memories and take part in the creation of the artwork through drawing, painting and stitching. This will involve a range of techniques including Batik, collage and applique.
Gaynor, an experienced textile artist, who has led many community projects said: “The workshops are open to anyone with an interest in this project. I look forward to hearing their stories and thoughts about what they feel should be included as well as working with them on creative activities to enrich the map and to reflect the town’s past, present and future.”
(Children aged 8 and over are welcome at the workshops but need to be accompanied by an adult.)
