Description:
Fall into printmaking at The Square this quarter! In this workshop, students will design and carve their own stamps and create a variety of greeting cards that can be used for Christmas, birthdays, or any occasion! All supplies are included.
Although not required, it is helpful for students to have prior drawing experience as you will need to sketch and create a simple design to carve (with guidance). Reference materials are available through The Square’s Art Library for inspiration!
Students will be introduced to the carving tools, speedy-carve blocks we will use for the workshop, and design, sketch, transfer, carve, and print at least one stamp, with the option to carve another if time allows. We will discuss the unique features of block printing; negative vs. positive space; mark-making; and composition. Students will be able to practice iterating and testing their prints to make sure their final carved block is the way they want.
Instructor: Sara K. Johnson
Sara K. Johnson is a printmaker, watermedia artist, writer, designer, and photographer in Great Falls, Montana. Originally from Sheridan, WY, Johnson earned a B.A. in English Literature from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA; and a M.A. in Museum Studies from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, KS. Johnson enjoys taking both a right-brained and left-brained approach to her artwork and sees the value both in loose creativity and calculated design and problem-solving. Although these influences may not always appear in her prints, she often draws inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement of the 1920s, Art Nouveau-era children’s book illustrations, and contemporary graphic novel/sequential artwork.
