Working Ornament, Flose, alana amore colvin group

Working Ornament is the primary group project of American musician and composer Hans Young Binter (featuring Vivek Menon, Gían Pérez, Orchid McRae), whose hypnotic performances are built from collages of Hans’ songs rendered through their unique methods for group improvisation. The unorthodox instrumentation of electric keyboard, violin, electric guitar and percussion is utilized to disrupt western musical arrangements of soloist and accompaniment - opting instead to draw inspiration from folk musics in which the intertwined collective whole and the act of coming together are favored over the spectacle of the individual performer.

Started in 2017, Flose is the main performance alias of improviser and composer Charles Chatman. Using noise as a bedrock/possibility space, Flose works to extract the complex sonic and affective capacity of nonstandard musical devices and techniques (toy keyboards, prepared lap harp, electric toothbrushes, etc). Flose pieces act as collision points for the sound worlds of noise and non-idiomatic improvisation, postwar concert music, drone, avant-folk, ambient, and extreme metal, highlighting points of resonance and contrast with each other and Chatman’s demure setup. From their intersection and breakdown, an electroacoustic gothic aesthetic emerges, foregrounded in textural curiosity, immersive melancholy, and surprise.

alana amore colvin is an avant-garde guitarist and composer. colvin’s work is rooted in Black American traditions, often holding elements of sensitivity and play. Their intention is set around creating a beautiful and intimate sonic space through harmony and improvisation often sitting the balance between soft delicate tones and raw distorted noise.
