About this Event

The Words That Keep Us Together Workshop is a four-session workshop for couples dealing with recurring arguments, defensiveness, escalation, withdrawal, misunderstandings, and feeling unheard.

Each session focuses on one part of the book . Before each session, participants read the corresponding section and complete the Reflection and Practices exercises. Between sessions, couples practice what they are learning in their own conversations.

During the workshop, Dr. Rein uses participants’ questions and experiences to help them apply the concepts and determine what they can say or do differently.

Agenda
Session 1: Having Conversations

Info: Successful couples have conversations. They can discuss issues and differences, talk respectfully, and respond to each other’s needs. In Session 1, you will work on skills that include:
Recognizing common destructive communication patterns, Becoming more responsive, Listening more effectively, Expressing complaints and concerns more successfully, Understanding the role that language plays in your conversations.


Session 2: Reshaping Conversations

Info: In Session 2, you will learn to recognize and change communication that contributes to conflict, including:
Attacks, Demands, Defensiveness, Withdrawal, Subtle criticism, Trigger words, Absolute language, Rhetorical questions, and Misperceptions. You will also work on more successful ways to express concerns and respond to your partner.


Session 3: Repairing Conversations

Info: In Session 3, you will learn how to recognize when a conversation is escalating, prevent it from gaining momentum, and repair it once it has gone wrong. You will work on skills that include: Recognizing escalation, Understanding how escalation develops, Preventing escalation, Filtering, Restating, Feedback, Correcting misperceptions, Rewording an unsuccessful statement, Learning repair techniques, Practicing how to restart a conversation, Getting the conversation back on track.


Session 4: Intimate Conversations

Info: In Session 4, you will learn how to share more openly with your partner, respond when your partner is vulnerable, and protect the time and connection that keep a relationship close. In Session 4, you will work on: Expressing vulnerable feelings, Supporting a vulnerable partner, Sharing thoughts, feelings, fears, and dreams, Intimate sharing, Building rituals of connection, and Protecting time together.
