Word to the People is SCOPE’s book club that uses literature as a tool to challenge mainstream myths, uplift marginalized truths, and explore Black and Brown social issues.
We're back at LORE Leimert Park! This time we're reading BetweenThe World And Me By Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Strategic Concepts in Organizing and Policy Education (SCOPE) is a social justice non-profit based in South Los Angeles. We build grassroots power to advance social and economic justice for Black and Brown communities across Los Angeles.

About the Book
Between The World and Me is a brutally honest portrayal of the plight of the African-American male in this country. Composed as a letter to his adolescent son, Ta-Nehisi Coates writes with chilling bleakness and precision about racism in America. This is no simple account of racism, but rather a concise attack on a system which has consistently rendered black lives worthless. Incorporating history and personal memoir, Coates has succeeded in creating an essential text for any thinking American today.
About the Author
Ta-Nehisi Coates is an American author, journalist, and activist who addresses complex issues such as racial identity, systemic racial bias, and urban policing. He connects the present—in the form of anecdotes about himself or others—into historical analysis in order to illustrate how the implications of the past are still experienced by people today.
