About this Event
Open to anyone who has done the basic woodwork level one course with me or who already has some basic experience with saws, cordless drills and marking out. Just five places, so plenty of individual attention, and a relaxed and fun atmosphere.
FOR OVER 18'S, WOMEN AND MEN WELCOME - WHOLE DAY COURSE
ALMOST ENTIRELY HANDTOOLS
LOTS OF TOOLS, TECHNIQUES AND PROJECTS This is a whole day course so I'll pack in as many different tools and techniques as I can on a range of different projects. I'll have some new wood from the timber merchant, some reclaimed stuff and we'll also work a bit with some greenwood poles. I'm going to look out something we can fix too, so you can see some glueing/repairing techniques.
HAND TOOLS I do as much as possible with hand tools on these courses, my thinking is that it's a much more sustainable way of working, is so much more peaceful, also, if you get the hang of hand tools it gives you a much better understanding of the whole process of making things in wood. I do use an elctric jigsaw though, so we'll probably be using that.
SIMPLE JOINTS ETC ETC We'll be cutting simple joints, sharpening and using planes, chisels and cabinet scrapers, shaping with rasps and files, and getting a really good finish including, (weather permitting), using stain, water based acrylic varnish and or oil/wax finish. We'll fit hinges, catches etc and we'll be thinking about sustainable design .
We always have lots of different projects on the go at Perth Community Farm, at time of writing we are working on a second compost toilet shed for our sister project, Inverquiech Farm, so you can see how useful these woodworking skills are around a garden, small holding or farm or if you maybe want to build your own off grid home one day or convert a van.
ANYTHING YOU WANT TO FIND OUT ABOUT?
I've done all sorts of woody stuff in my time - from making guitars, furniture, yurts and composting toilets to fitting kitchens...so do please let me know in advance if there's anything in particular you want to find out about -
DIRECTIONS TO PERTH COMMUNITY FARM
Take the track down from Jeanfield Road between houses number 29 and 27, through the gates that lead to the cemetery - small sign says "Commonwealth War Graves". Then take another track through the first gates on your left, sign to Perth Community Farm. We're usually in the big polytunnel right at the far end of that track. You can park right down towards the tunnel, or there's some space just inside the gates.
FOOD AND DRINK Please bring food and drink with you, there's no cooking facilities at the farm but there is a conventional toilet :-)
