Ever wonder how a slab of wood turns into a bowl, candlestick, drum sticks, honey dipper, lidded vessel, and other fun and useful wooden objects?
Woodturning takes wood, either dried or green (just cut) and using a machine called a lathe, spins the wood while we apply tools to shape it. We explore different species of wood, learn how to use measuring tools, various kinds of calipers including the golden mean, pencil compass, and others. We learn how to use the drill press and the bandsaw to prep our wood. And we practice using the woodturning tools, called gouges, effectively. Embellish the turned work by using carving, paints, or wood burning (pyrography).
Limited financial aid is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. We hold a few spots in each class for applicants, and you may apply at any time. Apply here, and if funding is available we will send you a link to register.
Accessibility notes:
- Parts of the studio space are not climate controlled.
- Students will be exposed to a dusty space with loud machinery.
- Students will be asked to focus at a machine for periods of time.
* Our goal is to serve under-resourced communities, female-identified, and gender expansive students to help bridge the gender gap in STEAM fields and trades, and create excitement and curiosity around these fields. We ask families to understand that there is limited space in our classes, and know that we welcome students of all genders and demographics.
