The American woodcock is a plump, well-camouflaged shorebird that favors wooded areas near open fields, making Miller Ecological Park’s prairie loop an ideal habitat. These ground-dwelling birds are rarely seen during daytime but are well known for their elaborate courtship display performed at dusk in the spring. During this display these birds fly up in swooping circles, chirping and twittering high in the sky! This is a don’t miss event for the whole family! The walk will start in the Miller Ecological Park parking lot. Then, we will walk approximately 0.5 miles to the back field on gravel, grass and dirt trails. It is typically wet and muddy, so be prepared for wet and/or muddy conditions. Dress for the weather!
We encourage you to bring a flashlight or headlamp, and binoculars if you have a pair.
