Women's Self Defense Workshop 2024 Norwalk

Our self defense workshop offers a basic introduction to hand-to-hand defenses and information on non-lethal weapons. In this interactive 2 hour class we will go over basic strikes and combinations, using training bags to practice. Teaming up with Independent Damsel in Defense Pro Stun Gun Jen (learn more about Jen here), we learn about stun guns, pepper spray, and pressure point tools.

This workshop is taught by women for women. We do our very best to be trauma informed and provide a brave space.

This workshop is for aimed at the experience of women. Please join us if you identify as a women or femme in any way that is important to you or are comfortable in a space that centers the feminine experience.

We offer this workshop on a sliding scale using a justice pricing structure. The invitation is to choose a price point that honestly works best for your circumstances and social location. We limit the number of free tickets you can purchase to 1 per customer. You can read more about justice pricing here.

We try to make this class accessible to everyone. If your financial circumstances are the reason preventing you from taking this class please reach out to me to discuss scholarship options.

FAQs

What kind of COVID precautions are you taking?

We are closely following the guidelines put forth by LA County.

All items used are disinfected before and after class.

Your attendance is your attestation that you are not experiencing any symptoms of illness, signs of a new cough, a temperature, loss of smell or taste, or any other symptoms associated with COVID 19 . You are also attesting that you have not been near anyone who tested positive for COVID 19 within 10 days of attending class.

We ask that if you feel ill the day of class, that you please reschedule your class to the following month. We are happy to credit any ticket that has to be changed or cancelled due to COVID 19 issues.

Who is the class instructor?

My name is Jen Franklin (she/her). I am a student and instructor of both Kempo Karate and Yoga. I teach Women’s Self Defense Classes as well as Trauma Informed Yoga Classes. My goal is to empower women through the Embodying practices of Self Defense and Yoga.

Is there a minimum age requirement for the class?

Yes. We HIGHLY suggest participants be at least 15 years old due to the adult nature of the subject matter. We try to have a rape crisis counselor on site for support and assistance with resources.

What should I bring to the class?

Dress comfortably, you will be moving around. Shoes are not permitted on the carpet but feel free to use socks if you aren't comfortable barefoot. Storage area is limited, so please plan to travel light. We respectfully ask that you remove your jewelry and watches as well, for your safety and that of your partners.

We have liability forms to complete prior to class. Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the start time.

Can boys or men attend?

At this time, for the comfort of those attending, our classes are exclusively for women and those who identify as female. This workshop is for aimed at the experience of women. If this does not describe you, please reach out to me and I can try to find a class for you.

Can I attend if I'm injured?

We cannot endorse training if injured. Anyone who wants to attend should be cleared by their doctor before attending a class. Please be sure to wear any supports or items that you may need like braces, canes, etc.
