Professor Michelle Gordon is the Academic Leader of Research (Acting) and in the School of Medicine. Over more than two decades, Professor Gordon’s research has significantly advanced the knowledge and understanding of HIV-1 drug resistance, viral evolution, and the application of molecular and genomic technologies to monitor antiretroviral treatment outcome. Her work has addressed critical questions surrounding pretreatment drug resistance, resistance surveillance, and the impact of expanding antiretroviral therapy programmes. These studies have supported national and international efforts to strengthen HIV drug resistance monitoring and have contributed to the scientific evidence underpinning the evolution of treatment guidelines aimed at preserving the long-term effectiveness of first- and second-line antiretroviral regimens.
An a dedicated educator, mentor and research leader, Professor Gordon has supervised numerous master's and doctoral candidates, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career scientists, helping to build the next generation of virologists and molecular epidemiologists in South Africa and across the African continent. She has authored an extensive portfolio of peer-reviewed publications, established enduring national and international research collaborations, and is widely recognized for translating molecular virology research into meaningful clinical and public health impact.
During her presentation, Professor Gordon will reflect on the students, collaborative partnerships, and technological innovations that have shaped her career.
