About this Event
* ***THIS IS A WOMEN-IDENTIFYING-ONLY TRIP****
DESCRIPTION:
For this adventure, we will be heading to one of the most popular waterfall hikes in LA county, Escondido Falls. The Escondido Falls hike is an easy way to see one of the most unique and spectacular waterfalls in Southern California. Unlike most falls, Escondido Falls is covered in moss, giving the waterfall a "bearded" look.
The trail begins a short distance from the Pacific Ocean and climbs moderately through a residential equestrian neighborhood before descending into the canyon itself. Once in the canyon the trail is fairly level, making this an easy hike. The lower falls grotto is a lovely shaded spot with a fairy-tale like quality even when the water isn't flowing. A scramble to the upper falls has its own rewards as you wander through the dry creek bed to the tall rocky cliff with moss hanging like stalactites from the cascade's multiple tiers. When the water flows, the upper falls are one of the finest waterfalls in southern California, but a hike through the close, tunnel-like underbrush of Escondido Canyon is always an adventure no matter what time of year you go.
This trail is an 3.5-mile "out-and-back" with roughly 475 feet of elevation gain. It is rated EASY/MODERATE. There are no reliable water sources on this trail, so please plan on carrying a half-day supply of water with you.
WAY OUT WILD DIFFICULTY RATINGS:
E (Easy) - Suitable for anyone who enjoys walking. Mostly level or with slight incline. Generally less than 4 miles.
M (Moderate) - Generally suitable for novice hikers who want a bit of a challenge. The terrain will involve a moderate incline and may have some steeper sections. Generally 4 to 7 miles.
H (HARD) - This is a strenuous hike that will challenge most hikers. The hike will be longer and steeper AND is deemed strenuous because of elevation gain. Generally 7 to 11 miles.
EH (EXTREMELY HARD) - Only well-conditioned and well- prepared hikers should attempt these hikes. The hike will be strenuous, long and steep, and may include some rock scrambling and challenging terrain. Generally 8 miles or more with EXTREME elevation gain.
