Women, Witches and The Power of Stories

Step beyond the Salem legends to explore Tituba, truth, power and the stories that have shaped how history remembers women.
Join Jenna's Traveling Book Club for a fascinating day in Salem as we take Maryse Condé's I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem off the page and into the real world!
We'll begin at the Peabody Essex Museum, exploring its Salem Witch Trials exhibition and the real history behind the events of 1692.
Then we'll head to a beautiful waterfront location for a special presentation by the Director of Education from the Salem Witch Museum.
Together, we'll explore the fascinating questions raised by Tituba's story:
• Who was the real Tituba, and what do we actually know about her?
• Where does historical fact end and fiction begin?
• How have women and people of color been silenced, marginalized, or persecuted throughout history?
• How did the image of the wicked witch develop, and what does it have to do with women's power, traditional healing, and society's fears?
We'll round out our adventure with a hands-on medicinal herb activity, thoughtful conversation about the book, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow curious readers.
Part history, part mystery, part book club—and a whole lot of fun!
Tickets are $40 on Eventbrite (link in the "discussion" of this event)
