🌺 Plymouth IWD #8MFrom lack of representation to fear of violation, our battle has been long and arduous. While we have achieved much, there is still so much more to accomplish.
Therefore, as we do every year, we will continue to stand tall on March 8th, honouring the original purpose that drove our predecessors to create International Women's Day: our rights and our struggles as working women.
With the new regime in the United States and its ripple effect on UK and global politics, any of our hard-won achievements are at risk of being undone. The intersectionality of our battles against misogyny, racism, classism, transphobia, ableism, and the marginalisation of vulnerable groups, particularly in the Global Majority, are already being threatened by a US policy that mirrors autocratic and fascist tendencies.
This March 8th, we rise with inspiration and resist with courage, confronting three major aspects of the violence we suffer:
🖐🏻 Sexual Violence: Our Bodies - We remember Gisèle Pelicot. Every “no!” that was ignored; every femicide and the complicit silences that allowed it to happen.
🖐🏻 Social Violence: Our Condition - Because we are a workforce that is overworked and underpaid; because we are heads of households whose efforts remain invisible; because transgender women are excluded from the conversation; because women of colour face stigmatisation and silencing.
🖐🏻 Neo-colonialist Violence: Our Territories - Because white supremacy has not been eradicated; it seeks to be revived and justified. Because war is a field of death for our children and our bodies. Because displacement from our lands is a violence against our families and cultures. Because fascism begins by stamping its boot on our throats, and those of all marginalised groups.
🌺 To Rise and Resist 🙌🏼 It means recognising that our voices, our colours, our flags, our work, our sexuality, our ideas, our songs, our dances, our rage, and our love, all have, and deserve, a dignified place in the public eye, within our communities, and in the way we engage in politics.
👉🏻 JOIN US at midday on March 8th at the Plymouth Sundial, to hear speakers from various sectors, to sing, speak, and move together, and to honour this historic day for women around the world ✊🏻🌺
More details coming soon!
EVERYONE is welcome! 🙌🏼
