About this Event
The American Revolution was fought in the name of liberty—but liberty was never gender-neutral. This lecture looks at how popular culture framed women’s participation in the Revolution, from patriotic heroines to powerful ideals of domestic virtue. By exploring representations of femininity, masculinity, and motherhood, we’ll examine how the Revolution opened new possibilities for women even as it reinforced familiar limitations. The questions raised in the 1770s still resonate, as debates over women’s roles continue to shape American public life.
