The Holocaust was not a gender-neutral genocide. Women were targeted not only as Jews, but specifically as women—facing unique forms of violence, persecution, survival, and resistance. This program brings forward the often underrepresented histories of women during the Holocaust, exploring their lived experiences under Nazi control through personal testimony and historical context. Participants will learn about Jewish women who endured unimaginable suffering, as well as women who risked their lives to resist hatred and help others. By centering women’s stories, this program offers a more nuanced and deeply human understanding of the Holocaust and its lasting impact.
This program will begin with a second generations speaker, Barbara Wees, who will relay the deeply personal story of her mother, Elizabeth Bodek. After surviving the horrors of Auschwitz, Elizabeth immigrated to the US and settled in Detroit.
Following Barbara's presentation, the program will expand into a broader lecture examining women’s experiences during the Holocaust across Europe, highlighting persecution, survival strategies, resistance efforts, and the enduring legacy of women’s resilience in the face of genocide.
This program is recommended for adults and offers an important opportunity for reflection, learning, and remembrance.
Join us in the Bennett Civic Center Library Auditorium.
