Wolsey Writers - LEONARD COHEN

On Saturday 7th November it will be exactly ten years since we lost one of the most eloquent and original artists in living memory, Leonard Cohen (1934-2016). So it is only fitting that our creative writing inspiration will be Leonard Cohen's lyrics and poetry.
Cohen was a Canadian singer-songwriter, novelist and poet. His music career began in 1967 with his debut album Songs of Leonard Cohen, and he was active for five decades until You Want It Darker was released just 19 days before his death, aged 82. In addition to 14 studio albums and eight live albums, he wrote three novels and several poetry collections. He was part of the 1960s NYC folk scene, had a bohemian lifestyle, and in the 1990s he briefly retired to a Buddhist monastery. After a 15-year hiatus he returned to touring in his seventies (his business manager had embezzled $5m which was never recovered) filling arenas with his understated brilliance.
Leonard Cohen’s lyrics stand out for their deep feeling and bare beauty. His songs including So Long Marianne, Bird on the Wire and Hallelujah reflect themes such as lost love, freedom and spirituality. And this Wolsey Writers we will celebrate his legacy by reading and listening to Cohen’s words on the page and on records. Then we'll attempt to craft a response.
