WOCAP Steering Committee Meeting: The plan to fund a major Port expansion
About this Event
At our WOCAP Steering Committee meetings, we get into the nuts and bolts of our . You'll learn how the West Oakland community, led by in partnership with the , is working to improve air quality in West Oakland.
The Port has a new plan to fund Turning Basins
The Turning Basins project is a major construction project at the Port of Oakland that paves the way for more massive megaships (larger than the Salesforce Tower!) to dock in our backyard. More megaships will lead to more cargo, which could lead to more dirty diesel trucks that release toxic emissions.
- The Port is considering instituting a container fee to fund Turning Basins: a fee on every container transported in and out of the Port. Port staff from the Sustainable Port Collaborative will walk us through how a container fee would work. We'll talk about what other community-centered projects a container fee might fund.
- How will Turning Basins affect our clean air plans? The Port has a ways to go to reduce emissions to meet the clean air goals laid out in the West Oakland Community Action Plan (WOCAP). Decarbonization projects like Clean Ports are getting us closer to our goals, but Turning Basins has the potential to bring more pollution to our neighborhood. We'll look at the Turning Basins Environmental Impact Report to explore potential project impacts.
- A lot of major projects are coming to the neighborhood. How can our community have a voice in them? Multiple confirmed and proposed projects could bring more pollution to the neighborhood, including Turning Basins, the proposed coal terminal, Eagle Rock Aggregates, and the recent announcement about Tesla and AI startup Prometheus. The neighborhood is heating up: how can we come together influence if and how these projects are built?
