According to Kriss Marion, "Conservation is contagious. It's addictive! You can't walk on a prairie in summer and not want to have one. I'm persuaded that if we can create more content and experiences that put women in touch with other women who are practicing good stewardship, we can transform the landscape and heal our overburdened waters." Marion is an urban journalist turned small-scale farmer. She practices managed grazing with sheep, cattle, and goats on a small, degraded wetland that's returning to sedge meadow through conservation practices. She is a Communications Specialist with Wisconsin Farmers Union, a member of the WI Women in Conservation (WIWIC) team, and runs Circle M Market Farm BnB with her husband, Shannon.
In 2023, WIWIC published Portraits of Love on the Land, stories of women in this state and their efforts to maintain pristine lands and waters. On Thursday, Dec. 5th, Marion will share some details of these amazing women and their loving-the-land journeys.
This and other sessions of the Thursdays at the U lecture series are all held 12:30-1:30 in the Blue Hills Lecture Hall (Ritzinger 234) on the UW-Eau Claire Barron County campus, located at 1800 College Drive in Rice Lake. All are free and open to the public, thanks to financial support from the campus foundation (which is funded by private donations). Neither parking permits nor seating reservations are required. Most talks are livestreamed at www.ricelaketv.com; most are also archived for later viewing at www.uwec.ly/Thursdays. For more information, call the campus at 715-788-6244 or email [email protected]. The December 12th lecture will feature Paul Billmeyer discussing “Seven Principles that Fuel Success.”
