Join Carrie DeJaco and fellow native plant enthusiasts for an easy guided walk through the woods at Reedy Creek Nature Preserve. This isn’t your typical winter walk—this one’s all about slowing down and looking closely. While the landscape may appear barren at first glance, you’ll soon discover that there’s a hidden world of life in the winter woods. Your guide, an experienced naturalist, will help you uncover the subtle signs of life that thrive even in the colder months.
The focus of the walk will be plant identification, especially the unique characteristics that are visible when leaves have fallen and the landscape has quieted. You’ll learn how to spot key features of trees and shrubs that stand out in the winter. One of the most interesting things to notice is the bark of different trees. Your guide will point out the different textures and colors that can tell you a lot about a tree's identity. Without the distraction of leaves, winter buds become a key characteristic to identify different species. You’ll learn how buds are arranged on branches, whether in clusters or spaced out, and how the shape and size of the buds vary from one species to another.
