Winter Seed Sowing Workshop

Join the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council (WRWC) for a Winter Seed Sowing Workshop focused on native plants, trees, and building healthier ecosystems along the Greenway.

This family-friendly, hands-on workshop introduces participants to the process of winter sowing and overwintering native seeds—an easy, effective way to grow resilient plants that support pollinators, soil health, and tree vitality.

During the workshop, participants will:

• Learn how winter sowing works and why cold exposure helps native seeds thrive
• Plant native perennial seeds in pots to take home and care for through the winter
• Hear from Kuno, our River Ranger Tree Steward, about the vital relationship between trees and native wildflowers, including the concept of “soft landings”—planting native vegetation beneath trees to protect insects, enrich soil, and strengthen urban forests

All tools, soil, containers, and seeds will be provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own native seeds if they have species they’d like to get a head start on.

In the spring, once seedlings have sprouted, participants will be invited to return half of their planted pots to the Greenway for a community volunteer planting event. Together, we’ll plant native perennial wildflowers beneath Greenway trees to support long-term habitat health and climate resilience.

• Content will be accessible to both English and Spanish speakers
• No prior gardening experience is required
